Center Life

A typical day at Blue Ridge Job Corps is full of activities to help our students prepare for the real world. Students get up early and spend the majority of their day receiving academic and hands-on career technical training.

After class, students study or hang out with friends before dinner in the cafeteria. After dinner, students may do chores in their dorms or spend their downtime studying. Most students are in bed by 10 PM in order to rest for the next day's tasks.

Recreation

Blue Ridge Job Corps boasts one of the best recreation programs in the nation. Students find our recreational activities to be a fun and exciting way to meet new friends, socialize, and just relax and unwind at the end of the day. Activities include:

  • Basketball
  • Baseball
  • Billiards
  • Bowling
  • Dances
  • Fitness classes
  • Movies
  • Roller skating
  • Tennis
  • Trips to other Job Corps centers
  • Volleyball

We also offer arts and crafts activities such as ceramics, drawing, painting, and textiles.

Special events are held off center throughout the year, such as basketball and softball tournaments, trips to the theater, art galleries, and craft shows.

Student Government Association (SGA)

The Student Government Association (SGA) is the voice of our students and is very involved in the operation of the center. The SGA meets weekly to discuss various projects and to address new items of business.

The SGA is responsible for operating the Student Store. Several nights during the week, the SGA distributes free snacks, such as hot dogs, hot pockets, pretzels, chips, or cookies, through the Student Store.

The SGA also participates in various community service activities by working with local civic organizations and businesses. These activities allow our students to give back to the local community.

The SGA offers several leadership opportunities for our students. These are two Leadership Conferences at Harrisonburg, Virginia and the Annual ResCare United Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. At these conferences, our center's SGA members can meet with other SGA members from Job Corps centers from all across the nation.

The Executive Board of the SGA consists of students elected to the offices of the President, Vice President, Chief Justice, Secretary, Treasurer, Sergeant of Arms, Reporter, and various Representative positions. Elections are held every six months giving all eligible students the opportunity to participate in the SGA.

Safety

Job Corps is committed to offering all students a safe and secure environment. That's why we have a Zero Tolerance Policy for violence, alcohol, and drugs. Any student who breaks this policy will be dismissed immediately from Job Corps.
